HBO Europe and Beta Film partner on TIFF-entry “Wasteland”

Munich, 8 September 2016. After the international success of HBO Europe’s “Burning Bush” by Agnieszka Holland, HBO and Beta Film partner again on the eight-hour drama series Wasteland (Pustina). The show has been selected as one of only five top international TV-series at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it will premiere Friday night in the Primetime section. The intense psychological drama and riveting mystery is set in the Rust Belt at the Czech/Polish border, visually powerful, grippingly atmospheric, and deeply moving. Screenwriter is Štěpán Hulík, who also signed responsible for the multi-awarded “Burning Bush” (eleven Czech Film Awards as well as the Golden Nymph at Monte Carlo among others). Beta Film will present Wasteland to international buyers as one of its highlights at this year’s MIPCOM in October in Cannes.

Wasteland by director-duo Ivan Zachariáš and Alice Nellis is part of the slate of ambitious original drama series from HBO Europe. The crime drama celebrated its national premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. In Toronto, all eight episodes will be screened.

Antony Root, EVP Original Programming and Production for HBO Europe said: “Through Beta’s efforts, skills and passion our miniseries “Burning Bush” reached viewers around the world. We are delighted to partner with them again on Wasteland, our latest original series from the Czech Republic. We both believe this gripping and emotional story will attract international audiences in a similar way.”

Beta Film-CEO Jan Mojto: “With its move into original programming, HBO Europe has become an important player in the European production landscape. Wasteland proves again HBO’s ability to produce extraordinary quality. We will do everything to introduce this exceptional show to the whole world”.

The Czech/Polish border region is poor in everything except for brown coal. The underground reserves are big and mining companies offer large sums in exchange for land, and the evacuation of the village. Most people see the offer as a chance for a new and better start, but the mayor, Hana, is fighting to save the village with the support of a few people for whom home is more important than money. But as the overall pressure results in a referendum in which the people themselves determine their future, something happens that changes everything.

Wasteland, starring Zuzana Stivínová, Jaroslav Dušek, Eliška Krenková, Leoš Noha, and Jan Cina, was produced by Nutprodukce and Etamp for HBO Europe. World sales are handled by Beta Film.
