Beta Film rolls out red carpet for European high end drama series

Munich, 22 March 2016. At this year’s MipTV, Beta Film rolls out the red carpet for its latest slate of high end European drama series. NSU German History X, based on true and current events, depicts a series of murders which, despite serious hints, was unveiled as right-wing-terrorism only ten years after the first killing. “Spectacular and thunderous” (Guardian) returns the mafia saga Gomorrah with its second season – four men and their clans fighting for power, entangled in a violent web of blood and love, hatred and revenge. Dark clouds of corruption are hanging over the glamorous and globe-trotting world of The Embassy, the new series of Spain’s powerhouse Bambú, producer of Grand Hotel and Velvet. The Nordics delivers the crime-thriller series Mammon – Nothing Is Just Politics, which just recently ran with tremendous success on Norway’s NRK.

In the aftermath of the fall of the Iron Curtain a clandestine far-right German terrorist group called National Socialist Underground, or NSU, began operating in Germany by killing immigrants in cold blood, termed the Bosporus Serial Murders. It took the police and intelligence services over ten years to hunt down the perpetrators. Beate Zschäpe, suspected to be an active member of the NSU, is still on trial today. NSU German History X (3 x two hours), produced by Gabriela Sperl (“Line of Separation”) and Academy Award-winning Wiedemann&Berg (“The Lives of Others”), is inspired by these real-life events.

The Embassy will celebrate its world-premiere at the MipTV International Drama Screening-section on Mip-Monday, April 4th, at 9 a.m. with writer/showrunner Ramón Campos and producer Teresa Fernández-Valdés at the Palais, Auditorium K.

Sold in over 130 territories, among them Sundance Channel US, the critically acclaimed series Gomorrah, headed by showrunner Stefano Sollima and based on Roberto Saviano’s international bestseller, throws the viewer back in the fierce world of the Neapolitan mafia. The era of the Savastano clan, which once undisputedly reigned over the Gulf, seems to be just about over. What lies ahead is the largest power vacuum ever in the history of the Camorra – with a couple of ruthless criminals waiting to fill the void. Gomorrah (24 x one hour) is produced by Sky Italy, Cattleya, Fandango and Beta Film.

Set in Spain’s diplomatic mission in Bangkok, The Embassy (10 x 70’) centers around the new ambassador, who takes up office to shed light into dark corners, but soon swims in the murky waters of political corruption, blackmail, fraud and possibly more. The show by bambú producciones and Atresmedia will bow in April on Antena 3. In the new Flemish dark series Amigos (10 x one hour) by producer duo Dries Phlypo and Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem five former prison-inmates fulfill their long-desired wish and start their new, clean life by opening up a restaurant - in a former brothel.

Beta Film’s TV Movie highlights are headed by the Czech TV historical drama-event Charles IV – Price of Power, celebrating the 700th anniversary of the famous King of Bohemia, who became Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Adidas vs. Puma, produced by Beta subsidiary Zeitsprung Pictures and G5fiction, tells the true story of the famous Dassler-brothers, without whom the world of sports is hardly imaginable. The feature film section highlights the Emma Watson/Daniel Brühl/Mikael Nyqvist-starrer Colonia, a nail-biting thriller based on true events from Academy Award-winning director Florian Gallenberger. Colonia (Majestic/Iris/Rat Pack) tells the story of a young couple who become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973 and find themselves locked up in a sealed-off area called Colonia Dignidad, a place nobody ever escaped from.
